Musical memories were created this month (January) as different generations came together in sweet harmony. Year three and year four pupils from Sandhurst’s New Scotland Hill School arranged a very special concert to sing to residents from Bracknell Forest Homes’ sheltered schemes.

The songs were based on the life experiences and memories of residents from the housing association’s schemes. The songs were created by pupils with the help of story teller Janet Dowling and musician Rob Harris and then played back to the residents during the concert.

Linda Wells, Housing and Community Services Director at Bracknell Forest Homes, attended the concert and commented: “I thoroughly enjoyed the concert. The children and residents put so much into it and it was lovely to hear the residents’ memories being brought to life in song. It was very moving.

“The concept of this joint project with the council is very good as it encourages younger and older generations to integrate and gives a great environment in which to learn and understand different backgrounds and values.”

Resident Iain Enderby had a story turned into song and added: “The children created lovely stories. It was a real joy to listen to them and a pleasure to speak to them afterwards considering the large age gap between us. They had obviously put in a lot of effort and taken great care.”

Doreen Hallett, another resident commented: “It was emotional but beautifully done.”

Dawn Day, Extended Learning Service Co-ordinator at the council, added: “The children have worked hard to create these songs based on the memories of the older community in Sandhurst.  It was a wonderful concert and the pupils loved meeting the people who they have been singing about.”

The concert is a joint project between Bracknell Forest Council’s Extended Services team and Bracknell Forest Homes’ Starfish Programme to provide unique ways for people to share skills, experiences and values.
